Who we are

The wattle does the work. You get the colour.

Clear Hearth Co started because the local nursery kept selling us plants that wanted an English spring. Natives do not need much. They need the right soil, low phosphorus, mulch that actually holds water, and to be left alone.

So we stock the short list. Seeds that come up in this climate, tools that survive being left in the sun, pots that breathe, and a fertiliser that will not burn a banksia. Eight things, held in Greenvale, packed by us.

If you are not sure what suits your soil, ring us before you spend anything. We would rather talk you out of the wrong pot than take the order.

Third summer for the mulch mats and the beds have not dried out once. I had been using bark chips that blew away in the first northerly.

Bought the shears expecting to replace them in a year. They have cut back grevillea twice and still hold an edge. The handles do not blister you.

The seed pack took a while and I nearly gave up — then the whole bed came up at once in September. Honeyeaters found it within a fortnight.

Questions

Before you order

Will these seeds grow where I live?

The mix is chosen for temperate and warm-temperate Australia — most of Victoria, New South Wales, southern Queensland, South Australia and southern WA. In the tropics or an alpine area, email us first and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth it.

Why low-phosphorus fertiliser?

Many Australian natives — banksia, grevillea, hakea and their relatives — evolved in poor soils and are damaged by the phosphorus levels in ordinary garden fertiliser. General-purpose product is the most common reason a healthy native suddenly dies back.

How long does delivery take?

Packed within 2 business days. Victoria 2–3 days after dispatch, most capitals 3–5, regional and WA/NT/TAS 5–8. Tracking is emailed on dispatch.

What if I change my mind?

30 days from delivery, resaleable condition, full refund of the item price. Faulty or wrong item, we cover return postage too.

Will the timber sculpture survive outside?

Yes — it is left unsealed deliberately so it weathers to a silver-grey, the way a hardwood fence post does. If you would rather keep the original tone, an annual coat of exterior oil will hold it.

Do you sell plants as well as seeds?

Not yet. Live plants need a nursery licence in several states and cold-chain freight we cannot do properly, so we would rather not do it badly.
